Creativity Ideas: Lightning to Spark Imagination

“The Box” isn’t a great movie. There’s some intriguing concepts in it, but there isn’t enough of just about everything else to hold it all together. Funny thing is, I actually bought the movie because It got me thinking... That someone or something could control lightning... That’s  good idea for a story.

Sure, the “box" bit was cool, with deciding whether or not to hit a button to kill someone “you don’t know” for a million dollars and what not. I wonder though how closely it followed the short story “ Button, Button” from which it was based off of (and actually has a Twilight Zone episode based off it as well). If anyone has read it, please leave a comment about it letting us know what it was like.
But back to lightning... Control of lightning isn’t a new story concept. There are all sorts of ideas and tales about lightning. Think Zeus, or the use of lightning as magic in fantasy. All interesting, but control of lightning as the central piece of Science fiction, now that’s what I’m talking about. In “The Box”, lightning is controlled by an otherworldly entity or entities that control the mind and body of the lightning strike victim played by a cool Frank Langella who’s character had a quarter of his face singed off. How else could lightning be controlled? Like say by a man made lightning machine? sure.
The Video Game: Mother 3 has a lightning machine in it, and I’m certain that it isn’t the only story to have one. Can you name any other works with lightning machines? Where else could lightning come from? If you’re looking for your next creative project, consider letting your imagination loose on the topic of lightning. Like say, what would a lightning machine schematic look like?
