I want to read a story

New anthology package has modern horror classics at great cost?

No... So I was walking through Wallmart the other day when I came across "The Haunted Anthology", that contains:

Insidious (2011)
The Blair witch project (1999)
The last exorcism (2010)
The others (2001)
1408 (2007)

Now that doesn't seem like too bad a collection even though the horror movies are of varying quality (which I would have difficulty calling any of them modern horror classics). What's most nasty in this case is the price (amazon.ca has it listed at 43.49 for DVD and 61.49 on Blu-ray (Taken on June 4th/2012)). All of those movies are old enough that I could throw together the same collection myself scanning the DVD bins of my local second hand store at near half the cost. Blu-ray might be a little harder to come by but I wouldn't say impossible.

Many times I'm all for these convenient collection packages, but in this case I would suggest skipping it and picking these up individually.

I like Insidious out of all of 'em. 1408 was decent as well. I know I've seen The Others but don't recall it. As for Blair Witch, well that was original for it's time but nothing exciting. I love horrors as they are in my favourite genre for movies but find it hard to find ones that don't bore me with their visibly low budget production and literally unbelievable acting.

I'm always on the lookout for recommendations. One I've seen about a year ago that I enjoyed and isn't well known was Splinter.

You know, I've meaning to rematch 1408. I keep reading on the net that a lot of people really liked it. Maybe I'll give it another try.

It's damn hard to find good horror these days. Most of the times the trailers are misleading to boot so it means weeding through all sorts of terrible horror move movies. I keep hearing cabin in the woods was great so I think I may try and take a look. As for some good older horror movies I really enjoyed "the changeling" (not the Angelina Jolie flick). What I would suggest not to watch is "the road" ( not the one based on that novel (though that wasn't too good either)). A horror movie that's on my list to watch is a classic with a criterion edition called "kwaidan" which I get the impression that if you are willing to try something a little different and like atmosphere, it may be right up your alley.

As for splinter, it's good to hear that you enjoyed it. I remember seeing the trailer for it but never got to watch it. It did look good. I may have to add it to the list.

Oh and The Last Exorcism was ok. Exorcism movies are pretty much all the same though. I find them quite dull. Last one I watched I do believe was probably one of the better ones, The Rite (2011).

Exorcism movies are pretty alike. I actually watched the rite and didn't mind it. For some reason, when it I think of that subgenre movie I think of the exorcism of Emily rose. It was a while back but I thought that it had some creepy parts to it. While hyped as hell, I recently felt a little more respect for the classic the exorcist. Apparently they used supposedly real sounds from an actual exorcism. There's all sorts of crazy stories around it's development and reception that give the movie a different depth.
